TL;DR: Businesses in Sullivan and Orange County don't switch marketing agencies because they picked bad ones. They switch because nobody fixed the foundation underneath the marketing. After watching that pattern for years, I stopped selling "more posts, more ads, more content" and built Mountain Digital around three things every agency was skipping: a website that converts, a Google Business Profile that gets treated like a storefront, and video. That's the Triple Foundation, and it's why we fix it before we scale anything.
For a long time I was doing what everyone in marketing does. Following the experts. Studying the strategies. Sitting through webinar after webinar that promised the secret.
And the whole time, I kept watching the same thing happen to local businesses. A restaurant, a contractor, a nonprofit would hire an agency. Six months later they'd hire a different one. Then another. Each time hoping the next agency would finally get results.
They never did. Not because the agencies were incompetent. Because every one of them was selling the same playbook: post more on social, run more ads, create more content.
Nobody was asking the questions that mattered. Why do most marketing strategies fail to move revenue at all? What are these businesses missing that keeps them jumping from agency to agency? And why does everyone ignore the one channel with the highest return?
I didn't have answers yet. But I had a vantage point most agency owners don't.
Before Mountain Digital, I worked as a cinematographer for Nimble Dragon Studios, a Hudson Valley production company that has since become our video marketing partner. That job put me on the other side of the marketing conversation. I wasn't the one pitching the campaign. I was the one filming what actually got made.
And I watched what happened when video was built on strategy and psychology instead of "let's shoot something." It didn't perform a little better. It dominated. Video content earns around 1200% more shares than text and images combined, and landing pages with video convert about 80% better than pages without it.
So why was almost every marketing company in the region treating video as an afterthought, or skipping it entirely?
The honest answer: it doesn't fit a $500-a-month retainer. Video takes real expertise and real production. It's easier to post static graphics, collect the retainer, and let the client's competitors who do use video pull ahead.
That was the first crack in the playbook. Two more followed.
I went to a three-day business summit. The room was owners of companies doing millions a year, and the schedule ran from six in the morning until midnight. My kind of event.
One speaker made a point I couldn't let go of. Small changes in the sales funnel create massive changes in revenue. He showed a case where a five percent improvement at one funnel stage turned into a 47 percent increase in final revenue.
Here's where my brain went. Every dollar of marketing, every social post, every ad, every email, eventually lands on a website. If that website converts at two percent and a competitor's converts at five, the competitor makes two and a half times the money from the same ad budget.
Most agencies were selling more traffic. Almost nobody was fixing what the traffic landed on.
So I went looking for how to fix it, and found research on applying neuroscience and psychology to conversion. Not "make it prettier." Not "add more features." Actual triggers based on how the brain makes decisions. The number that stuck: about 95 percent of purchase decisions happen in the emotional brain, in roughly the first 50 milliseconds, before conscious thought is even involved.
I tested it on one nonprofit client. Just their donation page. Nothing else changed: same traffic, same campaigns, same everything.
An 11 percent increase in conversion rate translated to a 74 percent increase in total donations.
That's when I knew the foundation problem was real, and fixable. It's the method behind our Conversion Science web design today.
The third piece came from a reputation management client. A business getting hammered by its Google presence, and not just by reviews.
When I dug into their Google Business Profile, I found what I now see everywhere: businesses treat it like a directory listing. Set it up once, forget it exists.
But for most local searches, the Google Business Profile shows up before the website does. It's the first impression. It's the digital equivalent of the storefront window, and most owners have never looked at theirs.
We started optimizing profiles the way we'd optimize a landing page: complete information, real photos instead of stock, seeded questions and answers, review responses, regular posts. The results across clients ran from 200 to 500 percent more phone calls, big jumps in direction requests, and 100 to 300 percent more engagement.
Second gap. Same cause. Nobody fixes the foundation.
Three revenue drivers. Three things most businesses get wrong. Three gaps every agency was either missing or choosing to ignore:
Put them together and the pattern I'd been watching for years finally made sense. Businesses weren't switching agencies because they picked bad ones. They were switching because every agency was building on quicksand. Social posts, email newsletters, ad management, all of it sitting on top of a website that leaks, a Google profile that looks abandoned, and zero video.
You can pour as much traffic as you want into that. It won't hold.
So that became the rule at Mountain Digital: fix the Triple Foundation first. Then scale. Here's how the Triple Foundation works in practice. Everything we build after that runs through the Growth Triangle: attract, nurture, convert.
Every engagement starts with the foundation, whether the client came to us for social media, SEO, or ads. If the website can't convert, we say so before we spend a dollar driving traffic to it.
Mountain Digital is the only Conversion Science™ certified firm in Sullivan County. In practice that means:
The methodology behind that guarantee has been validated across more than 500 implementations. It isn't a guess. It's a process. You can read more about the team on our About page.
Because most agencies sell activity (posts, ads, content) on top of a foundation that doesn't convert. When the results don't come, the business blames the agency and hires another one running the same playbook. The foundation never gets fixed, so the cycle repeats.
Mountain Digital's rule that three things get fixed before any other marketing spend is scaled: the website's conversion performance, the Google Business Profile, and strategic video. All three are first-impression channels, and all three are routinely ignored by local agencies.
A research-backed method for designing websites around how the human brain makes decisions, rather than around aesthetics or personal preference. It draws on neuroscience and psychology research and has been validated across more than 500 implementations. Mountain Digital is Conversion Science™ certified.
No. The first Conversion Science test was on a nonprofit donation page, and nonprofits remain a large part of our work in the Hudson Valley, but the Triple Foundation applies to any business whose customers find it online first: contractors, medical practices, restaurants, professional services.
We're based in Monticello, NY and serve businesses and nonprofits across Sullivan County, Orange County, and the wider Hudson Valley. Consultations are by appointment.
Measurable improvement in the conversion rate of the pages we optimize, typically 30 to 60 percent. If we don't reach a measurable improvement, we continue optimizing at no additional cost until we do.
